“we know around here”
An amusing superpages.com ad on the subway:
Isn’t it amazing how people will read anything on the subway? You, for instance, are reading this. And even though you are quite skeptical of advertising, you’ll continue reading it. See, here you are, still reading, not because you find it particularly captivating, but just because it’s here. And provides a momentary distraction from what you’re supposed to be doing – avoiding eye contact, physical contact, and by all means, verbal contact with your fellow subwayers. Or would that be subwayites? Right about now you’re probably asking yourself, “Why am I still reading this?” Perhaps you’re even pretending you’re not reading it anymore. But you are, aren’t you? You can’t help yourself. It’s here. You’re here. And after all this is the subway. By the way, we know a really good bookstore around here.
I not only read it once, but multiple times, since when I thought of posting it on my blog, I first considered memorizing it, although I quickly discarded that idea given that with my limited memory capacity and the limited time frame, it would be an impossible task. Instead, I took out a piece of scrap paper and a pen, leaned against the doors, used my suitcase handle as a writing surface, and copied the text of the ad, while my fellow subwayers gave me strange looks. I admit, New York City has its charm.
