There’s a formula for everything

During one of our five minute chatting breaks in lab today, somehow my grandmother’s attempt to set up me with a 35 year old guy came up. When I said that I thought 35 was a little old, Jeff was like, wait, how old are you? 22. Jeff thinks for a minute, and then says, yeah, that’s a little old, you shouldn’t date men older than 30 or younger than 18.

Try this at home: to calculate the proper age range that a man should fall under for a girl to date him:
Let y = the age of the eligible girl, then,

the lower bound = y/2 +7
the upper bound = (y-7) x 2.

So in 5 years time, if this guy and you are still unmarried he will fall within the age range appropriate for you...

(& if one would be 50, a 32 year old guy would be okay...)

That sounds about right...

Demi Moore (42) is dating Ashton Kutcher (27). According to the above formula, Ashton is only one year too young...

Of course there are examples that don't make the cut, but they don't usually seem too make too much sense either, for instance:

Dina Ruiz's having dated then 62 year old Clint Eastwood when she was only 27...

What if the 35 year old guy is your soul mate? That would be a problem.
