where in brooklyn?

The trouble with residing and working in New York is that when people ask me where I’m from or living, giving "New York" as a response is much too broad, and I can rarely get away with the more specific "Brooklyn" without being further prompted. But I can’t help feeling like being asked “where in Brooklyn” is somewhat of a personal question and a bit too much information to share with someone I just met. It’s not that I'm embarrassed of my origins—I actually take pride in claiming Brooklyn as my hometown, and though I don’t derive quite as much pleasure in admitting to my being reared in Crown Heights, at times I am able to convince myself that it makes me unique—but it’s just that telling someone I’m from Crown Heights reveals a bit more about myself than I’m comfortable sharing with a perfect stranger…

I'm similarly uncomfortable when people ask me where in Baltimore I'm from. I usually give a vague geographic description (the corner of the city I live in) instead of a neighborhood.
