as if it's really a choice
Today my advisor asked me if I ever shot a gun. Reminded me of when my mechanics professor asked if I could change a flat tire.
Peter Kramer says There's Nothing Deep About Depression, while Daphne Merkin asks Are pills really going to save us from ourselves? Genius without aberration is practically non-existant. But if we rid the world of abnormality, will it necessarily lead to the loss of genius? And if so, which should take priority? My own leanings: I have always aspired to normalcy, and yet, I am drawn only to deviation. In other words, I think the world would be lacking without “heroic melancholy," but would prefer to keep it out of my backyard.

Absolutely correct. Where would we be without the genious of Beethoven or Van Gogh or the other countless ones who suffered tremendous torment along with their genious? Did they want to be normal? What would they have been willing to give up for normalcy? What would the world have lost if they were normal? Lastly, who would really want to suffer as they did -- because it was suffering.
