coca cola wars and such

This morning my dynamics professor gave a special seminar on a research project inspired by his habit of brewing his morning coffee the night before. He described how one morning after he warmed up his mug of coffee in the microwave, he was stirring in the sugar, and he noticed that the pitch of the spoon hitting the bottom of the cup was dropping as he stirred. Then when he removed the spoon and tapped it on the edge of the cup, with each tap the pitch got higher. And with that he was jolted awake and had enough juice to do 6 months of research to solve this mystery. His tale, live demonstration, and results turned out to be the most mentally stimulating and interesting lecture of the semester. And I was considering sleeping in this morning…

So how did he explain it after the six months of research?
